Give recycling a go
Are you looking for a way to save money? The rubbish you put in your bin may hold the answer you need, as some Eastern Porirua tenants have discovered.
The tenants were working with the Sustainability Trust, which wanted to show people how they could reduce the amount of household rubbish they dispose of each week and save money on council rubbish bags or wheelie bins.
“We asked the tenants to save a weeks worth of household rubbish so we could trawl through it and sort it into recycle products, those suitable for composting and general rubbish,” says Lu White and Sarah Pritchett from the Sustainability Trust.
The survey found that about half of the ?rubbish' could be composted. Households that took part were given a small kitchen bin to keep food scraps in, plus a compost bin for the garden.
A follow-up visit to the tenants produced encouraging results. By using their compost bin and recycling, they have all been able to halve the amount of rubbish they put out for council collection.
“I wish we'd been shown how to do this ages ago,” commented one of the tenants. Another said “I only put out one bag per week now. I used to put out two or three.”
Recycling saves you money and is good for the environment.
