After renting Housing New Zealand homes for 18 years, Taranaki woman Sharon Savage decided it was time to look at buying her own home.“I wanted my own home for stability and security for my family,” says Sharon.
Sharon heard that Kiwibank offered a product to help people buy their first home.
“The most appealing thing to me was not having to have a deposit,” says Sharon. ”I knew I had no debt, but my only hesitation was that I was working part-time.”
However, she decided to give it a go. When Sharon received the application through the post, she filled it out and sent it back the same day. Six weeks went by without any word from Kiwibank so Sharon thought they were going to decline her application.
Recalling that time, a smile lights up Sharon's her face and her eyes sparkle. “I got a phone call at work advising that my application had been approved. It was the best feeling ever, particularly because that same day I was offered a full-time position,” says Sharon.
Sharon went house-hunting and finally found her dream home. She says she fell in love with the house as soon as she walked through the front door.
“My message to everyone is that home ownership can be a reality. Just believe in yourself, set goals, clear your debt and go for it.”
