Innovative ways to get rid of graffiti

Flaxmere graffiti busters working together to keep our community beautiful...

Residents in the Hastings suburb of Flaxmere are looking at innovative ways to deal with graffiti vandalism.

The solution has involved Hastings District Council councillor, Keriana Poulain, working with members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints youth council, Housing New Zealand and Housing New Zealand contractor Prestige Ltd.

“Ongoing graffiti attacks have to stop. Lingering tags are evidence that current programmes struggle to combat these problems,” said councillor Poulain. “We have been forced to look at innovative ways to deal with this multi-layered problem.“

At a Latter Day Saints youth conference held in November 2006, the youth council and all 110 youth members launched a community project to wipe out graffiti.

As part of the conference an alley way at the back of a housing complex was cleared of debris and vegetation and graffiti was painted over. Housing New Zealand contractors, Prestige Ltd, assisted with the wipe out, lending a huge trailer and a hedge trimmer.

“Flaxmere is beautiful and it should be promoted positively and graffiti free,” says councillor Poulain.

Together Housing New Zealand and the community will continue to support the youth group to keep Flaxmere graffiti free.
