Councils and Community Organisations

Councils - Overview

Local authorities play an important role in providing housing for New Zealanders on lower incomes or with special housing needs.

We help councils to develop regional housing strategies and work with them to ensure new housing developments are in the best interests of communities.

Through the Housing Innovation Fund we support councils to provide more housing in their areas. Housing New Zealand administers the Fund, which was set up in 2003.

The Fund aims to help community organisations, Māori and local authorities to increase their involvement in providing social housing. A number of communities have already benefited from council housing projects funded by the Housing Innovation Fund.

The Fund's initial budget of $63 million was increased by $16.4 million in the Government's 2006 Budget. This budget is split between Community Based Organisations and Local Authorities.
