Housing Improvements and Development
Auckland
Many parts of New Zealand need more affordable housing, but no region is feeling the pressure as strongly as Auckland.
Around 31 percent of New Zealanders live in Auckland, and population growth in the region is still strong.
Around 60 percent of people on our waiting list are in Auckland but only about 44 percent of state houses are in this region.
Scarcity of land is also raising questions about desirable housing densities, with an increasing number of people living in multi-unit dwellings, high-rises and terraced housing.
More housing for Auckland:
Providing more state housing in Auckland is a goal of the New Zealand Housing Strategy.
Other work in Auckland includes:
- upgrading housing units formerly owned by Auckland City Council, at various locations across Auckland
- building new housing that will be part of a new community development on ex-defence land at Papakura
- developing a sustainable urban community at Hobsonville
- researching ways to increase the supply of affordable land in Auckland
- working with local councils and community groups to increase the supply of affordable housing in Auckland
- Community Renewal projects in Talbot Park, Clendon and Northcote involving housing redevelopment as well as community building initiatives.
