Housing Improvements and Development

Papakura

To help meet the high demand for affordable housing in South Auckland, we have bought nearly 25 hectares of land in Papakura that was formerly owned by the Ministry of Defence.

An urban design for the site is expected to allow for up to 450 new homes - about 30 percent of which are expected to be state rental homes.

The project is planned to run beyond 2010. The overarching vision for the project is that it will create a vibrant, sustainable community.

There is expected to be a mix of state, private and community housing, as well as new schools. Planning is still in the early stages and no decisions have been made about the exact number or type of houses that will be built.

Working in partnership:

We have partnered with Papakura District Council and property developers McConnell Property. We are also working with the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Education, which bought an adjacent block of land to build new schools.

Project aims:

The project's objectives are to:

  • show how the public and private sectors can partner to create a mix of public and private housing
  • create a balanced community of state house tenants, home owners and private sector investors and tenants
  • create an environment that enhances the wider neighbourhood.
