Housing Improvements and Development
House of the Year
For the fifth year running, Housing New Zealand is sponsoring a community development award in the Registered Master Builders’ House of the Year competition.
The Housing New Zealand Community Development Award is open to builders who have built or modified properties (in excess of $100,000) to meet a community or social need.
The award recognises the importance of increasing the amount of social housing, and acknowledges the successful social housing projects going on around the country. This year three entries have made the final stage of the competition.
In the time Housing New Zealand has been sponsoring the award, we’ve seen some very deserving Community Development Award winners, including last year’s supreme award winner in Nelson.
Regional awards are happening around the country, with the national winners announced at a gala event on 8 November 2008.
Background
The House of the Year is structured on two levels — local and national.
Local competitions are held in 20 regions throughout New Zealand. A points-based system determines Gold, Silver and Bronze awards.
Gold means a property has been judged at least 80 percent higher than industry standard Silver means a property is at least 65 percent higher than industry standard Bronze means a property is at least 50 percent higher than industry standard.
All local Gold award winners are moderated, from which finalists are announced. Finalists are assessed by a national panel to determine national category winners and the overall Supreme Award winner.
