The new environmentally friendly house in Fordlands is another example of Housing New Zealand's commitment to achieving energy efficiency by investing in affordable, sustainable housing, according to Community Renewal Project Manager, Huia Lyons.

Last year, Housing New Zealand invested about $80 million on improvements to its homes through its Healthy Housing, Community Renewal, Energy Efficiency, Modernisation and Reconfiguration programmes.

"This house will be the first of a new generation of inexpensive, warm, dry and healthy homes for the average New Zealand family," Huia says.

"Lessons learned from this house will go towards improving house construction throughout the country."

In the spirit of Community Renewal, local training provider The Tumahaurangi Trust, and students from Rotorua Boys High School will gain practical work experience helping out with the project.
