Judging of the 2006 Garden Awards

The search for the best state house gardens in the country, led by Maggie Barry, broadcaster and gardening enthusiast, in the grand final of the Housing New Zealand 2006 Garden Awards, is finally complete.

With all regional Garden Award winners automatically put forward for the national competition, the judges were looking for the best of the best state house gardens in New Zealand.

Maggie Barry said that she was impressed by the high standard and the number of creative, colourful and well designed gardens entered.

"It's plain to see from the quality of the entries that many people have put a lot of time and effort into keeping their gardens looking lovely - and the awards acknowledge that. They also demonstrate that you don't have to spend a fortune on gardens to make them attractive," Ms Barry said.

The third Housing New Zealand Garden Awards attracted almost 3000 entries - around four and a half percent of the state housing portfolio.
