C'mon guys, get fire wise

- Fire Tips.
Housing New Zealand installs smoke detectors in all of its houses. They are installed for your own safety and at no cost to you. Smoke detectors help detect fires early, but they do not prevent fires.
During property inspections we check that smoke detectors are in place and in good working order. You are responsible for regularly checking the smoke detectors.
How do you know if you smoke detector is faulty?
- the red light has stopped blinking- there is no sound when press test button - you hear a continuous (for more than 15 seconds) or an unusual noise from the detector.< P>
If any of these things happen, or you are concerned your smoke detector is not working, contact your tenancy manager immediately or call us on 0800 801 601.
Here are some other safety tips to help keep you fire-safe this winter:
- Keep furniture, clothing and curtains at least one metre away from heaters and fire places.
- Ashes from the fireplace can take up to five days to cool. When removing ashes, put them in a metal container and store or dispose of them well clear of your home.
- Have your electric blanket checked by a competent service person each year. Always turn your electric blanket off at the wall before getting into bed.
- Use candles with care. Candles and oil burners can be dangerous - always keep them well away from flammable objects.
- Don't overload power points - use multi boxes with circuit breakers instead.
- When cooking with fat or oil keep the pot lid handy.
- Don't drink and fry.
- Before going to bed each night do a safety check to keep your family safe.
- For all emergencies dial 111 from a safe phone.
Fire prevention and fire safety are your responsibility...
