Experience is not necessary when it comes to gardening, and I don't work by the book, Gail Whitehead of Kamo, Whangarei says.

Gail, winner of the National 2003/04 Garden Awards in the Small Garden category admits that driftwood, unusual shaped rocks and colourful pots inspired her to start gardening.

She also likes to have an attractive outdoor entertainment area over the summer months, and some place where she can go and unwind.

After winning the National Small Garden section of the last Housing New Zealand Garden Awards, Gail asked her Tenancy Manager if she could beautify some of the communal garden areas of the complex where she lives with plants, rocks and driftwood.

Gail has done some fabulous work on the complex grounds that is appreciated by all who live and visit.

"It makes it a nice place to come home to and it has lifted the general look of the complex," said Gail.

Gail, who considers herself a layman gardener, is not sure whether she will enter this year's competition, but would like to see other tenants give it a go as the rewards are fantastic!
